If your original MAC address is revealed, an hacker can use it to impersonate you! On many networks (wired or wireless) access is restricted based on MAC address to avoid access to unauthorized devices on the network. This is especially a threat when you are on a wireless network and are using a public WiFi network like in coffee shops, hotels or airports. A hacker on local network thus can track machines (and thus you) on the network. Your MAC address can be seen by everyone on the local Ethernet network using many simple tools. Note that only one computer would be able to access the same network (no two computers can have same MAC address on same network to access it without any problem)Ī very important reason is privacy. If you want to access a network, which limits access based on MAC address, from another machine then you can change MAC address to the one for which you have access. So changing the MAC address to old network adapter is the quickest fix instead of telling your ISP to register your new MAC address which may take lot of time. So in case your network card goes boom, the new card you replace it with will have different MAC address and so the Internet wont work. Your ISP uses MAC address to identify or authenticate your Internet connection. OPs problem was indeed handled incorrectly though This is an exact replacement(literally exact same mobo-but working), and this company owns pools of MAC addresses so they can do what they want and still be within standards. Mouse got coke spilled on it and doesn't work, not my problem. The monitor also got "broke" when the network port died, not my problem. If the hard drive is also failed, too freaking bad. All I was paid to do was replace a failed motherboard and burn in the failed node's MAC address. I can literally walk off the site once that MAC address is seen in California. Now I call their tech support and and with the software that I downloaded from their FTP that morning, I burn in the MAC address they tell me over the phone. Replace the mobo, bhal blah blah grease, clean whatever, you know the drill. Here is the situation when I would have to change a MAC address : I get a work order to go replace X node at Y address on Z day in a predetermined window of time. Some companies chose to use MAC addresses vs IP addresses.
